OHIO NOTEBOOK: Lake Erie Shores and Islands honored by TripAdvisor


TripAdvisor, one of the most trusted names in travel, recently announced its 2017 Certificate of Excellence awards and the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region is home to nearly 150 winners! Celebrating its 7th year, the Certificate of Excellence designation recognizes establishments that consistently earn great TripAdvisor reviews from travelers.

With more than 390 million unique monthly users and 290 new traveler-generated reviews posted every minute, TripAdvisor is a trusted online resource for planning and booking a perfect trip. With more than 500 million reviews and opinions of hotels, restaurants and attractions worldwide, it is the world’s largest travel site.

Winners include everything from quaint bed & breakfasts to mega-resorts, local cafés and Michelin-starred restaurants, hidden gems and world-famous attractions.  The Certificate of Excellence designation accounts for the quality, quantity and recency of reviews submitted by travelers on TripAdvisor over a 12- month period. To qualify, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.

Pumpkin Field Day Coming Aug. 17

Autumn will be here before you know it and if you are a pumpkin grower, you won’t want to miss the Aug. 17 Pumpkin Field Day.

The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Western Agricultural Research Station, 7721 S. Charleston Pike South in Charleston. Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. The field day will offer beginning and experienced growers valuable research updates regarding disease management, insect management, weed control, and new pumpkin and winter squash varieties.

“Basic Firearm Care and Maintenance” seminar scheduled for Aug. 29

A “Basic Firearm Care and Maintenance” seminar will be offered on Aug. 29, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

Hours are 6pm-9pm and the seminar will be held at the ODNR Division of Wildlife District Three Headquarters, 912 Portage Lakes Drive, Akron.

Content will be geared toward the novice shooter and/or hunter. Focus will be on safe assembly, disassembly, care, and maintenance of common firearms for the purpose of hunting, sport shooting, or self-defense. Safe handling and care for many different types and designs of firearms along with some budget-minded methods for maintenance will be also covered.
