Strong start for new school year in Columbus

Columbus City Schools

Columbus City Schools welcomed nearly 52,000 students for the first day of classes and the official start of the 2017-2018 school year on Wednesday. This year, Ohio's largest district is dedicated to empowering its students more than ever before.

"A strong start to a school year doesn’t just happen on its own. It relies upon the tireless efforts of so many teams across the entire District and throughout our community who have spent the last few months and these last several days working and preparing for the launch of another successful school year," said Dr. Dan Good, Superintendent/CEO.

Students across the District were welcomed back by cheering crowds, with several local businesses and organizations, faith-based and non-profit leaders, elected officials, Board of Education members, administrators and supportive community volunteers clapping in students as they entered their buildings.

"As we launch into this new school year, aligned for a strong start and sustained momentum forward, we commit to empower our students more than ever before," added Dr. Good, "providing each of them and their families with the opportunities and supports they need to overcome any challenges that may eclipse or overshadow their paths to achievement, accomplishment, and success."

Empowerment is a critical part of the mission of Columbus City Schools, and it’s in everything the District does to serve the City's children, young people and their families.

"What a great time to be a student in Columbus City Schools: reading and math scores are up, increasing numbers of students are learning valuable job skills as early as middle school, and our graduating classes get larger and larger each year," he noted.
