Attending an Ohio State men’s basketball game should be an exciting experience filled with energy, passionate fans, and a packed arena. But in recent years, ticket prices have soared, making it harder for the average fan to attend. With thousands of empty seats at some games, it raises the question—would lowering ticket prices lead to better attendance and a more exciting atmosphere?
The Cost of Attending a Game
For many fans, the cost of attending an Ohio State basketball game isn’t just about the ticket price. Factor in parking, concessions, and merchandise, and suddenly, a night out at the Schottenstein Center becomes a significant expense.
While marquee matchups and rivalry games will always draw a crowd, midweek games against lower-tier opponents often struggle to fill seats. If the demand isn’t there, why not adjust ticket prices accordingly? Selling 50% of the arena at high prices doesn’t seem as beneficial as selling 80% or more at a reasonable rate.
Would Cheaper Tickets Create a Better Atmosphere?
A fuller arena leads to a better game-day experience for both fans and players. The energy from a packed house can change the momentum of a game, giving the Buckeyes a real home-court advantage. Teams feed off the crowd, and a lively environment could make Ohio State an even tougher place for opponents to play.
Lowering ticket prices—especially for less popular games—could encourage more students, families, and casual fans to attend. Not every game needs to have premium pricing, but having affordable options, like $20 entry tickets, could make a huge difference in filling up the arena.
The Business Side of Ticket Pricing
Of course, Ohio State isn’t going to give away tickets for free. The athletic department relies on ticket revenue to support multiple sports programs. However, if thousands of seats remain unsold, isn’t it better to lower the price and get more people in the building?
A full arena means more concession sales, merchandise purchases, and engagement with the program. Plus, a more energetic environment makes games look better on TV, potentially driving more interest and sponsorships.
Finding the Right Balance
Ohio State could take a tiered approach, offering lower-priced tickets for weekday games and lesser matchups while maintaining higher prices for premium games. Creating fan-friendly promotions, student discounts, and family packages could also help bridge the gap between high-priced seats and empty arenas.
At the end of the day, it’s about making Buckeye basketball as accessible and exciting as possible. A packed house benefits everyone—fans, players, and the program itself.
