STARK COUNTY – Join the Stark County Hunger Task Force for a tour of the Southwest Hub Pantry during an open house Sept. 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A new direction in hunger fighting for the charity, the public may tour the new and improved SW Hub Pantry in the Community Campus at Goodwill, 408 9th St. SW, during an open house, reported Amy Weisbrod, SCHTF executive director.

The new pantry serves as the focal point for the initiative to enhance and advance hunger fighting through collaboration in southwest Canton and a model for future hubs in other areas of the county.

Sponsored by 91 Wood Fired Oven, the event features a light lunch and conversation about Stark County Hunger Task Force’s new pantry, vision for the future and advancements in hunger relief. R.S.V.P. by Monday at starkhunger.org/openhouse.

Serving an average of nearly 2,700 individuals a month through February, the facility served an average of nearly 4,000 a month from June through August.

Presenting a significant physical improvement over the former pantry, the facility includes a separate reception room and expanded pantry area in suite 1435 of the campus.

With the continuing increase in need for services through this and all network pantries, this example of a collaboration enabled SCHTF to apply efficiencies and economies of scale to increase the capacity of the pantry by nearly 48 percent.

Funding for this phase of the consolidation included grants from The Ralph L. Wilson Philanthropic Fund at Stark Community Foundation, the Paul and Carol David Foundation and Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton.

Network-wide Stark County Hunger Task Force supports more than 30 pantries throughout the county feeding nearly 28,000 individuals a month.

The SW Hub combined the SCHTF pantry with the former Shiloh Baptist Church pantry at 700 Market Ave. South. A second example of collaboration is the recent merging of the former Community Life Church of God in Christ – Salt and Light pantry services at 1104 Walnut Ave. NE with the Canton Calvary Mission Pantry at 1345 Gibbs Ave. NE.

Along with the pantry itself, officials streamlined the warehouse, which formerly housed both the pantry and warehousing for greater efficiency.
